just got back from the boat and striaght to this forum to ask a question............I am on the hard and I put water to the engine to see if would start.....(a hose to the fresh water intake)

water started coming out the tranny dip stick vent hole.......which leads me to belive that the tranny cooler is toast...............
the question is.......
is this repair done with the tranny in place or does the tranny have to come out............is there any other soloutions.......

its a yanmar 4 cylinder with a kanzaki transmission (my spelling may be off....because I in panic mode)

thanks for the great help

the problem is that I have freshwater is coming into the KM4a tranny............this is a water cooled transmission, (which the cooler must be cracked from the winter)...........can this be fixed in the boat, or does the tranny have to come out..................................................

thanks

Navicula.. I haven't found good drawings, but it looks like the cooler is an insert into the starboard side of the transmission case. There is probably a cooling coil that connects to the outer cooling housing.. The coil probably extends inside about 3/4 way across the case.. If you have room on the starboard side of the transmission of about 1/2 or 3/4 of the case width, the cooler can most likely be removed by draining the oil first, then unbolting the cooler housing, then removing the cooler coil and housing. You'll need a new case gasket when you replace the cooler.. The part is available from Yanmar, or a good machine shop could replace the cooler coil only.. The coil may be perforated by corrosion or may have been displaced by the water pressure from a city pressure hose. Good luck with it.

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER
connected direct hose pressure to a raw water intake on a wet exhaust boat.

It is rare that I use words like NEVER but this is one of those cases. You want to use an in/out bucket with the hose filling the bucket and the RW pump sucking from the bucket just like it does from the ocean.

Have you tried to crank the motor over since this...? Hopefully you got lucky and just blew the gear cooler....

the cooler damage was a result of not properly winterizing , not related to hooking up a hose............
what eles could go wrong........and I could use some luck

thanks
