Transmission Slipping in Forward

I don't have the damper plate issue but my transmission is now slipping in forward. This is presumably from 14 yrs of abuse because of the Catalina solution for vibration. I objected at the time to upping the idle to 1000-1100RPM but it was that or shake the engine out of the boat.
Boat speed at that RPM is close to 4kts so it was always in and out of forward to maintain a reasonable speed in harbour.
Now it slips in forward. There is some forward drive but you can rev the engine up with no appreciable change. Occasionally if I throttle up then back down; it will hook up but not consistently. The oil level is correct; it was almost always stored full over the winter and fresh ATF in the spring.
There is no comparable issue in reverse.
Anyone else rebuilt one of these?
Replaced it with something else?
Repowered with electric?

Thanks
Peter

Thanks Guys
I wasn't planning to ignore the damper plate; just saying it isn't directly related to the slippage
