I have a '91 H375 with a Yanmar 3HM35F and the original Kanzaki transmission. I'd like to change the transmission fluid. The original owner's manual specifies Shell Dexron or Mobil ATF 220. Of course both of those are no longer made. I think there is now a Dexron VI. Are the latest designations backward compatible? I also see on line recommendations to use a straight 30 weight oil. I can't imagine doing that in my car - why would I do that on my boat?

The Dexron VI is the correct fluid for your transmission. It is backwards compatible with original Dexron specifications.. only better.. The recommendation for 30 wt engine oil is for a different type of transmission, so don't do that ! (many automobiles specified 30 wt engine oil in manual transmissions .. my vintage 1959 Jaguar was one of 'em. )

Thanks Kloudie. Thought that might be the case but wanted confirmation.

I would encourage you to consider Amsoil ATF. It worked great in a Catalina 28 - less noise and vibration.
