Transmission oil level

I recently noticed quite a bit of fluid under my engine that I am pretty sure is motor oil. since the oil in the engine is always black I looked for another source which led me to the transmission. I'm pretty sure this oil did leak from the transmission but I have not found the source of the leak. I'm sure I need to add oil to the tranny but I was wondering if someone could tell me if the small hole in the top of the dipstick is the full mark? the low mark appears to be a grove around the dipstick close to the bottom. Also is 30w motor oil the type of oil you are supposed to use? that semms to be what the manual indicates.

Follow this...

Leif, your transmission fluid is NOT black oil. It is a specially refine red/pink fluid (transmission fluid). The dip stick is on the top of the transmission and screws into the hole. The dip stick is about 5" long and at the end of the stick is a ring engraved around the stick. It is about 1/2" from the bottom. Pour your transmission fluid in the hole, but DO NOT allow it to rise above the ring mark. Check the fluid level by placing the dip stick into the hole, but DO NOT screw it in to take the reading. Only screw it in when you are done. Overfilling can lead to definite transmission problems. Good Luck, hope this helps.

My H 31 Tranny Oil is Black

Having discussed this subject at length with the Mack Boring reps and their authorized mechanics, my transmission fluid is the very same oil I use in my engine. It's not pink. I agree that it is critical to measure the fluid level by placing the dip stick in the hole and NOT screwing it it! Don't over-fill.

Not Red, pink or black!

The 1GM10 and 2GM20(F) use a KM2-C transmission the 3GM30(F) uses a KM3-A You should not have Black Transmission Oil. And it is NOT Transmission Fluid either. It is suppose to be 30wt engine oil. The Yanmar manual list the lub as SAE #10W-30, CC Class. This is assuming that you have KM2-C transmission. Now if you happen to have a 3GM35(F)engine then you would be using Dexron-ATF .7l If you oil is yellowed (darker than new oil) you are in need of an oil change.

What model?

Sorry, I didn't mean to mislead you. Some models cycle the same oil thru the engine and trans. What model engine are you speaking of? Mine is a 3 cylinder and has a separate trans reservoir.

transmission oil

thanks for the info. I did not mean that the transmission oil was black. I said the engine oil is black and therefore new that the leak must be coming from somewhere else. the transmission oil looks like new motor oil. I was just trying to figure out which mark is the full mark. Paul says to just fill the transmission with oil to the grove near the bottom of the dipstick. If that is the case then I really don't need to add oil. I still am not sure where the oil under the engine came from but it looks like the same motor oil as the transmission. Steve, I read your article about floor replacement. My father did install a new teak and holly sole and it was pain removing the dinette and settee but it looks great now. OUr floor had flooded and also became dark in color.

Hole in the top of the dip stick is the vent.

Lief: The hole in the top of the dipstick/cap is the vent hole for the transmission. There is a mark on the bottom of the stick. This is the full mark. If you overfill these transmissions they are going to blow oil out of the vent, cause problems and noises in the gear box. There was a recent thread on this subject in the last 3-6 months. I would like to replace my floor some day but I have a lot of things I can do before this. We now have carpet over the sole, so the bad parts of the floor don't really show. How long did it take him to replace the floor?

floor replacement

Steve, It probably took about 2 weeks due to making several trips to a local boatyard for materials and advice. the firts thing he did was remove the old floor and use it as a template for the new floor. He duplicated the two hatches to the bilge including the trim around each hatch to finish off the edges. He also took care to make sure the stipes in the floor lined up from the dining area into the v berth. We painted both sides and all edges with polyurethane. When you replace the piece in the v berth area be careful with two most forward screws, we actually slightly penetrated the hull with one of them.
