I have Hunter1980 27 tall rig, with a 10 hp Renault Diesel engine. The main transmission seal is leaking. Anyone with any advise in replacing the seal would be much appreciated, or advise on where to find a manual? Thank you.

10 hp?

umm... You mean 8 hp right? I'm not sure what you mean by the main seal, if is at the output shaft or the seal where it meets the engine. Anyway, ripping apart the transmission (or reversing gear per Renault) is not a big deal. You can remove the trans out of the boat in less than an hour with basic tools. The trans is not to difficult to disassemble but you will need a gear puller to remove the flange and coupler. The seals are metric and can be order from Waterway Marine in MD.

Ray, if you are pretty sure it is just a seal, and not a failing bearing that is allowing enough shaft wobble to have failed the seal, then a good transmission shop can change the seals without disassembling. Seals like that are standard and the number on the seal will tell you what they are. Get the numbers before the seal is removed incase there is damage.
Since you asked the time, here is the instruction book on how to build that clock !
A great book about seals and the different options available.. Page 81 .. around 5-8 is how they are sized..

Seals are available at places like Motion Industries.. or other ball bearing suppliers.

Thank you Manny!

Wow Manny,

Thank you for the speedy reply. I will relay this info to the hubby.;) Also, thank you for sending a pic of the disassembled motor. Thank you again.

That's just the transmission and it's internal guts. Not much too it really. I took it out to rebuild it cause it leaked oil out of the rear seal (at the output shaft) when running. Unfortunately the new seal (and bearing) did not fix the problem. Anyway, Kloudie is correct, you don't need to disassemble the transmission, just remove it from the engine and using a gear puller remove the coupler or the flange (depending on which seal you are replacing).
