(yes, everything's happening at once - see my other posts) The Hurth tranny on my C36 seems to be getting harder to shift in and out of forward and reverse. For example, it's harder to find neutral. Any clue as to what's happening? What's the fix? Thanks, jv

cables

John - If your shifter uses cables, check that nothing has come adrift. I have found that with cables, especially with long ones, if really helps if the cables are securely fastened in place along their whole length. I use cable ties. Doesn't seem to matter how convoluted the cable run is, just minimize the cables opportunity to flex.

John, Also make sure the screw in the lever at the

helm for the shifter is screwed in tight. (its at the base of the Edson Lever) A little loose here and the whole thing seems loose.

Watch those Edson shift lever screws!

I had one shear off as I came into the dock last year - fortunately I was shifted into neutral! Two other people on my dock have had the same experience with them breaking. They are a fine thread stainless (I think it is 1/4-28), and I couldn't find one anywhere locally. I ended up driving to Edson to pick some up. They told me there that it is essential to keep the screws thoroughly tightened, otherwise they will fatigue and break. They gave me some Loctite, but that doesn't seem to help, and I now tighten the screws down every week or so.

Sticky pins and bearings

This spring I had to replace the stearing cables on an edson pedstal. While it was apart I took the time to clean up the pin and bearing through the housing for both the transmission and throttle. Since then I have not had any problems with the handles breaking off( they were so stiff before that I kept a screwdriver handly just incase the throttle handle broke. I'd jam in the screwdriver and use it as a handle, it happened twice before). You just might have some crud to cleanup like I had.

Isolate

Why not first isolate the problem. Disconnect the cable at the transmission and see which way the trouble points. Good luck red

Isolate - good idea

I just assumed my transmission was trashing itself internally.

Tried, but couldn't isolate...

I tried to seperate the cable connection from the shift lever adn was unable to do so. I removed the cotter pin, and the clevis was frozen in the arm. Has anyone else removed this part? jv

John, Sure I have removed that lots of times

I am surprised that it is stuck. Just spray it with WD-40 and let it soak, the pry it out. If that is that stuck in there I am concerned there are other things corroded/jammed which might be a problem. That area shouldn't get that bad I think its made of bronze?

Lube the cable

John, The transmitions don't often become hard to shift if maintenence is followed with changing fluids. However, Cable can accumulate junk, kinks, frays, rust, etc. My first guess would be the cable. good luck r.w.landau
