I have only had my Hunter 31 for a short period of time and would like to know what is the very best to use when I replace the transmission fluid. I have had a couple of people tell me that I should use the same oil I use for the engine. Is this correct, or what is the very best thing to use. My hunter has a 16hp 2 cyliner Yanmar Diesel engine and is a 1987 year model. Thanks for your suggestions!! Capt. Jim

Capt. Jim: That is the deal 30wt oil. I would recommend that you get a manual on your engine too. It can come in handy and you don't need to worry about hearsay regarding the engine. Take care of your Yamar and it will outlast your boat.

Some use tranny fluid
Before you pour that oil in make sure that your transmission requires oil and not transmission fluid. I'm pretty sure a 1987 vintage would use oil but you may want to get that confirmed before you do it. Some Yanmars do use transmission fluid. Of course as soon as you open the filler tube and check out a sample of what's in there you should be able to tell if it's oil or transmission fluid.

Hey Rich....Am moving to San Diego in 30 days. My boat will be coming down a few weks later. I am planning to moor it at Chula Vista. There are two marinas down there. Where are you moored and do you have any better ideas on moorage? The reason that I picked chula Vista is that it seemed quiet and like I wouldn't have to constantly be babysitting my H34' all of the time. I would appreciate your expertise if you have a moment. First you need to determine if you have a 2GM20. Check the spec plate on the engine block. If it is indeed a 2GM20 then Yanmar calls for 30 wt. same as engine lube oil. IMPORTANT! Check the fluid in the transmission to determine if it is indeed 30 wt. 'cuz you don't want to mix ATF and 30 wt. Better yet, drain the trans at start over. And get the manual as Steve D. suggested.

Jim, ATF stands for
"automatic transmission fluid" which is very red in color. There are 2 or 3 different types of ATF, many of which are not compatable with each other. Also transmission oils can vary in weight from 10w to 80/90w. Be positive of the requirement for your engine and transmission. A manual for your combination of power is a must. Ray

Welcome to San Diego. Since I have had my boat I've kept it in a slip at Shelter Island and now on Harbor Island. I don't know too much about the mooring situation here. I know there are some down in Chula Vista (where you are looking), along Harbor drive, by the bridge off of Coronado Island and just off of Shelter Island. I'm sure there are more but I can't think of them right off hand. Chula Vista is probably pretty quiet (away from the jets at the airport and North Island) but it's pretty far to get to the ocean since it's the South end of the bay. You might think about where you're going to do most of your sailing before you decide on a permanant location. I'm pretty sure the moorings along harbor are "visitor" moorings and can be rented for up to 90 days. You might start there so you can spend some time on the water here and figure out where you eventually want to be. Good luck, hopefully we'll see you on the water here soon. Rich Marconi Won

Anybody know what an '83 H34 with 3GMF engine is supposed to use? I'm sure I have transmission fluid in mine but thought that was what was supposed to be in there.

My 34 is 84 model and transmission on my 3GMF 30 (20 HP) is Model #KM3A. There is a plate on transmission. Yanmar dealer up here says : If tranny is model KM3A, it takes .3 liters of same motor oil as engine.On the othe hand,if tranny is model KBW10D, it takes .7 liters of DEXRON transmission oil.
