Something to Check

Bruce, I had what I thought was a transmission cable problem last year. After spending a couple of hours disassembling the binacle and then working on the transmission end, it turned out to be a very simple fix. The pin that goes through the transmission shift arm (where the end of the cable attaches) had frozen and the cable was being bent when I tried to shift gears. A quick spray with WD-40 loosened it and it has worked fine since. It only took me another hour to put everything back together. Hope that's all you need. Good luck... Roy

Same thing happened to me!

It's not a good feeling when you reach down to find reverse and feel that the unmistakeable loss of life in your transmission linkage cable. It happened to me last year. This discovery was made some 4-5 boat lengths from my slip (sailboats do glide further than one might think) I learned the true meaning of PUCKER FACTOR! Anyway after all said and done I pulled the cable assembly out (remember to tape some line to it when you pull it out, that way you can use that same line to pull your new one back through) and took it to a local marine parts store. I found the most important factor in ordering a new one was to get the correct throw or distance the inner cable would move. You can get your length from the old one. The one problem I had was matching up the hardware assemblies on each end of the cable. The old didn't match up with the new. All togather I spent around $100 to get the job done.
