Transmission Cable for '77 Hunter 27

The transmission cable on my 1977 Hunter 27 is binding and I would like to replace it. The engine is the SB-8 and I assume the original Yanmar transmission. Does anyone know what type of cable to use to replace it? From the bit of info I have found here and other places, it seems like a standard Teleflex33C would do the trick. One concern is whether the the threads will fit the existing connectors on each side. Any help/guidance is appreciated.

Have you tried putting some light weight oil like Marvel Mystery Oil in the cable between the two surfaces yet? Work the oil in from the top to the bottom and it should work better if not as good as new.
If not then replace the whole thing.

These cables cannot be lubed with any success. Replace them when they start to bind.

If you've already confirmed that the transmission lever on the engine is moving properly, then the cable is one of: worn out, kinked, damaged... and you will need to replace it. In my experience the cables aren't engine-specific and the diameter, threads, bushings etc are the same, so you should be able to get a suitable replacement cable at any good marine engine place. It would help if you can remove and bring the old cable with you, (or at least measure it) so that the appropriate size cable can be selected.

Thanks for the advice

I did try lubricating the cable but it didn't help. As Ken suggested, I disconnected both ends of the cable and made sure the tranny is shifting properly and the shifter is also working properly. That only leaves the cable. I'll be replacing it this week.

Just to complete the thread in case anyone else needs to replace the shift cable on a similar boat. I tried to use a replacement cable (TFXTEME 3300) that the person at the marine supply store said would work perfectly. Unfortunately the new cable had 10/32 threads (the original had 5/16) and a different O.D. so none of the original hardware would work. After consulting with a local marina parts person, he identified the correct cable as a Teleflex CCX64308. It workes perfectly and I was able to use all of the original fittings.
