I'll start the questions and we'll see what info helps solve your problem.
First: Have you checked the oil in the tranny?
Next: Have you checked to see if the prop shaft is turning while in neutral?
Then: Have you checked the stuffing box for leaks (More than it usually leaks)?
And: Does it drip normally when in gear (unless it's a 'dripless')?
And: Is the stuffing box hot to the touch after running in gear awhile?
Finally: What kind of noise, bang bang, grind grind, hum, or klunk klunk?
I'm sure our resident experts will help you, if you can provide some additional info, i.e. your tranny model and year (if known).
