I have over 20 years sailing experience, mostly on inland Lakes, including a little on the Great Lakes. I have also done a couple of charters. It is time for retirement which will be on the East Coast. Looking to develope a bibliography of reading materials which will help me transition from protected waters to coastal cruising. Also interested in any courses which may be helpful to me. Mostly I see courses which are oriented to basic to intermediate sailing. I am interested in course work about piloting and navigation, especially non-electronic. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Nav Course

Just finished nav course in CT at Adult Education given by CT Marine Services Co. I think they are in Essex CT and give courses through capt. licence.My instructor Mike Lang can give you info at 860 521-4127. He'll probably refer you to courses offered on East Coast

Coast Guard Auxiliary

in my area has an excellent coastal navigation class. I've taken three classes held at a local high school in the evenings.I've pasted a link below to www.cgaux.org (then click on Public Boating Courses).

Here is a Secret

The Nav Courses and many of the others are free if you are a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Most insurance companies will also give you a discount may be the same deal with the Power Squadrons. Might be worth checking into.

Jack, There are various On-The-Water courses that

would be very helpful. Look into them where you will be cruising. They are typically 3 day weekend courses on a boat similar to what you will be doing. They go over everything from Anchoring to Coastal NAvigation to provisioning to galley work. That should get you feeling a bit more confident....with 20 years and your type of questions (which shows a healthey respect for the water) I feel you will do just fine.
