I am installing a new transducer thru the hull. What type of marine sealant should I use? Also, where can I purchase yanmar parts for a decent price? Thanks .......Mike

Transsucer Sealant

My hometown Marina recommended Boatlife Life-Seal. I used this for the transducer and works well and is very easy to work with. I bought it in a caulking tub for 14.89. Good luck, Chuck

5200 adhesive sealer would be fine also.

At least for metal; if the transducer is plastic you might have to check for compatibility.

You left out some items that might have a bearing. What type of hull material. What type of transducer. Does it have a paddle wheel in it for a knotmeter. If just a transducer for depth, I would not make another hole in the hull, if a glass hull. Solid glass hull, you can shoot through just as good a if you had cut a hole. If a cored hull, then drill away. Mine is mounted inside the bottom of the hull with marine tex. No hole, no possible leaks, and works just fine.

What ever you use...

Don't over tighten as it will just squeeze out the bedding compound and you may be left with a leak. If possible, let it cure, then tighten.

Polyurethane

Notwithstanding the obvious disadvantage (semi-permanence), I’d bed the transducer with a high quality POLYURETHANE Bonding Adhesive, such as 3M “5200", or Sikaflex “252". I’d also purchase a “sleeved” type (removable) Transducer. HTH, Gord

3M 4000

I've taken to using 3M 4000UV for all sealing applications that I might someday want to remove without a lot of effort. I have been told that this is the same as 3M 4200 but I'm not sure. It says it is suitable for above or below WL applications including through hulls and in the above WL application is UV resistant. I used it to bed a new depth transducer I installed this winter and it's working fine. The next owner will thank me too. I tend to use 5200 when the sealing may be performing a structural purpose as well as sealing purpose.

3M #4000UV

#4000UV fits the bill as a 'high quality' polyurethane. Replacing 3M's Fast Cure 4200, 3M Marine 4000UV performs the same as 4200 but it has superior UV resistance that prevents it from yellowing due to sunlight. It is a polyurethane adhesive sealant that is very similar to 3M Marine Adhesive/Sealant 5200, but that is about half the strength, which allows for disassembly of parts. 4000UV cures to form a firm, rubbery waterproof seal. Its flexibility allows for the dissipation of stress cased by shock, vibration, swelling, or shrinking. Designed for marine applications above and below the waterline, 4000UV bonds with good adhesion to wood, fiberglass, gelcoat, certain plastics, and metals, and is paintable and sandable, Tack free in 2 hours, cures in 24 hours.
