Any recommendations on type and location my GPS transducer. Not sure of through the hull with water ballast?

"Lapsus Mentalis" happens to all of us. Surely you cannot drill into the water ballast enclosure and a transducer could probably not transmit through it. Consider locations either forward or aft of the enclosure as I'm afraid that to the sides you would loose signal as the boat heels. I would also consider installing the transducer inside the hull. Transducers do not transmit through air so the chosen section of the hull cannot be porous and it would need to be set in either a wet enclosure, a small pool of epoxy or a wax toilet seal. You can always try out the location before final or permanent installation. Check the archives as there are plenty of threads regarding the install. Also confer with Crazy Dave as he knows those boats in and out.

Thanks to Benny
Vessel had one attached mid stern when I .purchased it. Unit was bad didn't work.
Removed when bottom painted. Installed Garmin now to figure inside or outside
Sounder. I can't see where center on stern or center forward of stern inside is any
different. Outside allows for water temp reading.

Mine is installed under the V-Berth just off center where the water ballast tank ends. I mounted mine with epoxy.

Pending which model of Garmin you purchased, a transom mounted transdeucer might have been included. If not, you have a few options. Least expensive is a transom mounted unit. Then an in hull is the next step up. Finally a through hull. The in hull unit from Garmin is made with an adjustable angled cup so it can be placed up to 45 degrees and set to ping vertically down. With the through hull you'll need to find the most horizontal area to drill through.

Larry;

If a thru hull transducer, there is only one place on that boat which is below the rear berth to the starboard side of the bilge pump but a little aft for the flattest area where to install. Make sure that you use no larger than a two inch hole saw and remove all paint on the outside of the hull where the outside of the flange of the transducer comes in contact with the hull. Suggest that you lightly sand and liberally use 5200 when installing. Leave that transducer alone for a week to let cure and dry.

The other is to install it inside and you will have to sand the surface smooth cleaning off with acetone or alchohol, Never thought plummers putty would work but Kermkit made me a believer of that. There are other modes of attachement though. '

as for a puck style attached to the end of the boat, I was never really a fan of that style. you still have to cut a hole for the wire to run thru anyway you look at it.

It is good to ask questions but are you sure that you are not taking on too much at one time?

I mounted mine between the rudder and outboard . Ran the cable thru the fuel locker and up the binnacle to the GPS/ sounder.
Simplest way for me. I hate drilling holes in my hull.
I don't even like the galley sink drain as ifs only 6" above the waterline. Looking for a different thru hull drain.

No intention of putting a hole in boat. I had a fish finder that didn't work
So I removed that Trans that was mounted on stern with wiring already through.
Going to mount one back there as is the simplest for me.

The plummers putty does work. I helped to install the one on Kermit's boat and it made me a believer. Installed where the one for thru hull would go and that is the best place to put it. fYou have to sand the surface and clean up with alcohol, apply the putty and put the depth finder into the putty. Build up on the edges and allow time to harden and wire up.
