Where is the best spot to install a garmin through hull transducer that will shoot though the hull on a 1976 32' O'Day center cockpit?

Is the garmin model design to shoot thru the hull or be installed in the hull?
I'm just thinking your boat would have a heavy solid fiberglass hull and I guess I would make sure it's going to give you accurate readings shooting thru the hull...Is there a reason to avoid installing it in the hull?

I have two transducers on my 32.....first one the PO installed right under the cockpit on the area of the hull that is pretty flat (port side of the engine bed) then I elected to install a sonar to my Garmin system and I installed that transducer in the bow under the V berth, now my thinking is if I'm heading for shallow waters the transducer in the bow is going to help a lot better than the one thats behind my keel

Dear Hammerhead54,

Your transducer should point straight down in order to measure the depth directly under the boat. It doesn't matter where you install it, as long as it points straight down and you can wire it OK. You can use wood shims and some type of glue or putty to accomplish this if the inside of the hull is curved. Angled wooden winch pads might work for you. The end of the transducer should sit horizontal.

Pointing the transducer forward will give incorrect depth readings.
