i bought a used lowrance 334i gps fishfinder to replace non-functioning depth and knot meters. where would you folks suggest placement. so far i havent had good luck with visibility and sensitivity with temporary placement, not wanting to epoxy in permanently yet. my old eagle tranducer did fine in aft berth near head holding tank on port side. thanks for any and all advice.

My Datamarine current transducers (depth/speed) are located under the fore-peak berth ahead of the keel on the port side. They are very difficult to reach from the inside of the boat if you need to pull one or both out to clean. If I were going to replace a depth transducer in my boat (1) I would use an in-hull rather than thru-hull puck, (2) I would use silicone rather than epoxy to glue it in place (silicone is not as good and you must make sure all the air bubbles are squeezed out, but it enables you to move the puck if necessary), (3) I'd put the puck (a) either next to the holding tank, (b) or next to the raw water intake seacock in the engine compartment, or (c) in the little compartment aft of the engine compartment that allows access to the bolts for the strut. I realize all of these positions are quite a bit aft of the "normal" location forward for a depth transducer, but these devices don't tell you what's forward of the bow anyway. Finally, all of the possible forward positions may present a challenge in running the cable from the transducer to the read-out while the the aft locations mentioned do not.

makes perfect sense. i tried toilet wax ring as a temporary adherant, but it was way too hot and mostly melted. will try silicone in the aft compartments to see if i get a good read. cables sure will be easier to run to helm as you suggested. i appreciate your expertise. mombojerry

The problem with locating transducers in the 28.5 and many other boats is the structural liner grid creates areas where there are two plys of inner and outer hull / grid material. The local Hunter dealer helped me locate my original transducer locations in the bow ahead of the grid so the speed and depth thru hulls were cored thru a single thickness of the hull with an interior backing plate installed withthe instrument. It's probably more critical when you are applying the transducer to the inside and 'shooting thru' a single rather than double hull layer.
