My Datamarine current transducers (depth/speed) are located under the fore-peak berth ahead of the keel on the port side. They are very difficult to reach from the inside of the boat if you need to pull one or both out to clean. If I were going to replace a depth transducer in my boat (1) I would use an in-hull rather than thru-hull puck, (2) I would use silicone rather than epoxy to glue it in place (silicone is not as good and you must make sure all the air bubbles are squeezed out, but it enables you to move the puck if necessary), (3) I'd put the puck (a) either next to the holding tank, (b) or next to the raw water intake seacock in the engine compartment, or (c) in the little compartment aft of the engine compartment that allows access to the bolts for the strut. I realize all of these positions are quite a bit aft of the "normal" location forward for a depth transducer, but these devices don't tell you what's forward of the bow anyway. Finally, all of the possible forward positions may present a challenge in running the cable from the transducer to the read-out while the the aft locations mentioned do not.
