I use a uniden that looks the the hull on a Oday 272. It's just forward of the keel near the centerline under the forward berth. I first put the transducer is a bag of water and just placed in on the hull with the wiring temporarily hooked up to find a spot that worked before mounting permanently. Dennis

Thank you Dennis.

I was thinking of below the V-berth but it is really nice to hear what actually work.

I have an O'Day 26 which was essentially an update of the 25. My transducer has a bracket to mount it. I attached the bracket about 20 inches from the centerline on the inside of the V berth base. Too close to the centerline may get keel induced turbulence.

Thank you Shoaldrafter. Never thought of the turbulence issue.

Dave-
I just recently installed a West Marine el cheap-o Hawkey depth sounder in my Oday 25. I put it, as recommended by the mfg, as far forward as poss., just ahead of the water tank. Very simple install and works like a champ.

Thanks Doug,

I have been looking at quit a few fishfinders in the past couple of days to add to the chartplotter I have decided to keep. One of the problems is that is seems like all of them come with a standard transom mount transducer. I have read from one person here and a couple on a few websites that you can mount the transom transducers as a through hull puck. I will use the tranducer in a bag of water test first to see if it is accurate. It would be nice to use the transducer that comes with the unit.

With a little more digging I found a PDF manual for the Garmin 340C which is the unit I am leaning towards. I guess this answers my question.

The standard transom mount transducer can be mounted as a shoot-thru-hull transducer. The temperature shown will be the temperature of the hull.

Get a past copy of " Good Old Boat", They had an artical where a sailer put a fishfinder on a little larger boat then yours and the spec he looked for were VERY interesting $ angle of beam @ 20/40 60 degrees and single/dual beam units. Good reading.
