I recently purchased a 1987 hunter 31. I am interested in a transducer fitting cap in the event I need to inspect the transducer. 1) Can anyone recommend size and where to purchase it assuming it is special and 2) Do I really need to inspect the transducer and if so, on what frequency?

why

not sure why you would want to inspect the transducer normally they work or they dont ive never actually heard of anyone checking one other than by turning on the insrument.im assuming you have a thru hull that you can pull the transducer out from the inside.i have however heard of ppl swapping out a transducer while in the water but that requires some quick manouvering!31 is a beautiful boat by the way congrats!

Re: why

My marina neighbor has a 30 ft Hunter and told me he has done it many times (over a 100). Although I do not plan to do it I am simply researching all the options in the event I need to inspect or perform maintenance on it while in the water. The water is pretty in the San Francisco bay in the event I had to get into to inspect the knot metter paddle wheel, etc. even with my dry suit. When I purchased the boat last November the knot meter did not work but the pull out for a survey revealed a barnacle attached itself to the paddle wheel. I knocked it off before the boat was put back into the water and it has worked fine ever since. This is my first sailboat and the owner's manual does not have such information in it nor have I found the fitting on the boat.

Either the speed transducer works or not. My experience in the bay area is they often get little buggers in there and may need to be cleaned. Sometime just taking the boat out will flush them out of the impeller.

Assuming that you tranducer can be removed from inside the boat, you just need to unscrew the cap and either replace it with the plug or cap it with a towel to stop the flow of water. Clean it and replace it.

Really not much of a big deal.
