Oday 30 Conneaut, OH
Hello again! I am a newer owner of an 1982 Oday 30. I have asked a few questions before and am grateful for all the advice. It seems this boat although being kept up cosmeticly has not been mechanicly maintained. I did not recieve an engine manual with the boat so I sent for one and recieved it last week. I checked the tranny fluid this week and of course it was low. The book says to use type A automatic transmission fluid. It also has a warning that additives such as molybdenum sulfite or the like must not be contained in the oil. I think dextron is the replacement for type A fluid but I'm not completely sure. I would appreciate any advice on this as to what other people are using. I would also like to know if anybody has used synthetic fluid like Moble 1. I would also like to know if anyone has used synthetic oil in there engines, I have a universal 5416. I use Mobil 1 in my truck, it has 176,000 miles on it and doesn't use a drop of oil between changes Thanks in advance for any opinions, as always they're greatly appreciated. Rich

Universal 5416 transmission fluid

My wife and I also have a 1982 O'Day 30 with a Universal 5416 engine. We read the same warnings as you did. My wife tried a number of Auot parts stores and Walmart with no luck finding the type A fluid. Evrybody at the auto parts stores wanted to sell her the new and improved versions. She found the fluid at a local garage and we have had no problems with our transmission. I am not a diesel mechanic so I go by what the manual says. So far no problems. Joe "Dreamer"

FYI

For anyone who would like to know, I called Direct Diesel at Torreson Marine Inc. The technician told me to stick with what was called for by the manufacture, which is now Dextron III. He said he would not advise changing to Synthetic lubricants. Rich
