repairing the transmission
Jim,I had the same thing happen to mine 12 months ago. Mine got locked in reverse (no forward or neutral). Nothing like backing into the marina a full throttle to get ribbed from the next year.It is possible to fix it yourself. The transmission only has about 5 moving parts; if you lost forward the most likely scenario is that the bearing crapped out. I found all the parts I needed through Waterway Marine in Annapolis, which just orders them from Nanni in France. The basic steps are: remove engine (two guys can lift it and set it on the sole); remove transmission (about 6 bolts, it can be lifted with one hand so just take that part out); disassemble the primary and secondary shafts using a gear puller; replace the bearings and the oil seals; reassemble with a gear press. The whole rebuild cost me $160 for the parts, $25 for the tools (a 23 mm socket and a BIG pipe wrench) and $20 at an engine shop for the use of a gear press. If you need any guidence on it, or would like pdfs of the pages in the mechanics manual, just let me know (debdanbryant@adelphia.net) and I can help you out. Good Luck!Dan Bryant
