I have replaced the original motor mount with an adjustable one. I attached it with a 3/16 x 12 x 12 backing plate. Is it safe to travel about 50 miles with a 1990 15 hp evinrude motor attached?

Not a good idea.. Too much leverage in the mount for the weight of motor to bounce/torque on stern...

Most small trailerable sailboat motor mounts are designed for carrying up to 10 hp motors. With the 23, you are overpowered and it weighs more. I would take it off and store inside forward of the boat or in the back of the tow vehicle. It wieghs less as I suspect it is a two stroke. However, if you are insistent on leaving the motor on the bracket or motor mount, put a line around the handle and tie it upwards to something on the boat to help allieviate some of the wieght and to keep it from bouncing.

I have over two million miles of trailiering sailboats and the above is based on experience also as a former dealer.
