Trailering with Roller Furler

I have a Catalina 22 with a CDI roller furler. I am planning on doing some trailering to the bay this year. Because it can be a pain to put the jib on the roller furler I was wondering if it would be ok to keep the sail on the roller furler while trailering for short periods of time. Has anyone ever done this? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Mike

Just make sure it's secured

I've trailered extensively with two different boats with roller furling (multiple trips from Colorado to Florida, Texas, Lake Mead, etc.), and never taken the sail down, and never had a problem. One boat had a 'sock' cover, and the other had no cover, but UV protective strip. It is important to make sure you have a tight, secure wrap on both, and I always made sure to wrap the cover in several places to keep it from flapping too much (at all). Any other questions, fire away.

I second Dave's response.

I used to do it all of the time. Make sure it's secure at the bow (I used a specially cut board so I could lash it down. Rigging is a little harder with a roller furler...and that's complicated by the additional weight of the headsail attached. Just have someone taking care of it during the process (or be creative with a couple of bunjee cords. Good luck. Brad on the Willy T

Yes, on a CDI support is important

Hey Brad - I was sure seeing alot of Willie T's bottom the other day when the wind finally came up!! Looking good. Mike (sorry to digress there, but us mountain sailors are just so happy to have water, and warm weather) On the CDI, or any of the flexible furlers, it is very important to support the overhanging end of the furler (especially since it's very heavy with the drum hanging out there). I have used my mast raising pole, and a 2x2, and lots of line to kind of splint it. I guess I liked the 2x2 best, because I cut it to the exact length I wanted, and it didn't rattle around in the back of the truck as bad. Let us know if you have more ???
