Question for those of you who trailer frequently. What's the best thing to do with the rudder? Remove it the whole thing, just the rudder itself, or take out the back piece for the tiller handle and bolt it upright? Will be making a 400 mi trip this spring, so would like to make sure I do it right. Thanks, John S/V Icymoon

I'd Just Tie it Off

Make it secure so it cannot fall down and forget about it.

Planned trip

John, Being a Ft. Wayne area native myself (Leo High School) I was trying to figure out where you're going 400 miles from Ft. Wayne. Please share as it's now thinking of next spring time of the year here in the Midwest. My wife and I towed our 240 up to Lake Michigan over the 4th of July, this past summer. We started in Muskegon and made it as far south as Holland. We didn't give ourselves nearly enough time to do what we wanted. Also we won't plan a trip around a major Holiday again as the crowds were just too much. We're planning a sail to the Lake Erie Islands/Cedar Point combo trip for next summer sometime.

For Ken

Going down to Kentucky Lake for a couple of weeks this April. Normally, I keep it in a slip at Wawasee. Was going to take 3 weeks and try for the Gulf, but rethought that plan. John S/V Icymoon

Tie it secure and go

I use a combination of methods to secure the rudder from moving around and dropping to the pavement. Tighten the T on the rudder assembly after raising the rudder. Cleat off the rudder uphaul line. Center the rudder and tighen the tiller tamer. Finally, I run a line from the sternrail out around the rudder and back to the sternrail. Redundancy is great.
