can the mast take a short smooth ride laying down in the stern crutch, still attached to the step?

I did it..........

I stepped my mast at home and just set it in to the crutch and towed the boat 7 miles to my marina. Only problem was that the wind vane was at an angle that caused the fixed ends to bend upward. Well, I did not notice when I raised the mast....so the wind vane did not work. But that was it. Sure made it easier to raise the mast....... Dave s/v Simply Magic

Why?

Why would you want to do that? It seems like an unnecessary risk to take when stepping the mast at the launch site is not a major problem. There would be a great amount of unsupported mast extending beyond the crutch. Perhaps you don't have chuckholes in your roads, but hit one the size we regularly encounter here and your mast would take on the V-shape of a pup tent. And if not a chuckhole or some other object in the road, think of all the other calamities that could occur! If you decide to do so, hang a big red flag from the top end of the mast. Otherwise you would not be highway legal. Dale Wile Sandpoint, Idaho
