Looked all over this forum, couldn't find the answer.

What's the best bottom paint for a trailerable M25. The paint it has now (what flakes are left) comes off chalky on my hand. Almost ready for paint, but I'm finding conflicting reviews. I'm in Oklahoma, fresh water, lake sailing. Probably loading on a trailer Most of the time, possibly getting a wet slip.

As always, all suggestion are appreciated.

Also, does the sanding dust cause cancer or anything? Heard some say use a Sheetrock sander after soak it wet... Not sure though...

Thanks,

Blake

Hi Blake

Fwiw, if you don't mind the work to sand the old paint right off I'd suggest VCTar. It is a 2 part poly bottom coat that is a water barrier and a hard coating that doesn't dry out like some antifouling paints so stays on. It is actually the primer coat for VC 17 antifoul but works wonderfully by itself in fresh water. Cleaning the type of algea you get it fresh water require an easy scrub with a brush. I brush mine right from the deck a few times a season.

The dust from the sanding is not good for you but a decent respirator is all you need. The dust you wear is not going to hurt you, just make you colour specific for awhile.

Hope this helps.

you probably have alabative bottom paint. its designed to wear off, and is one of the few bottom paints that can be used for trailer boats. (still effective after weeks or months out of the water) the hard 2 part paints will be faster, less mess, but more money. its a better solution, but its more work and money.

I have alabative, since I'm cheap and lazy! ;)

Do you just trailer or do you leave the boat in for long periods? If I were trailiering mine each time, I'd remove the bottom paint completely and get the hull nice and slick again.
My boat stays in the water all season. I use Petit Vivid. It's a hard, self polishing ablative. Lots of sailors at my lake use VC17. I don't understand it. They re-apply it every year and it didn't even perform well in tests at Practical Sailor.

Thanks for all the comments, please keep them coming!

I thought about going back to a slick bottom, but I have quite a few blisters. As it stands right now, I am trying to be cheap and get this boat in the water so we can learn to sail. If all goes well we will possibly get a wet slip to keep her for half the year. So I need the cheapest/easiest/most practical method available.....not asking to much,huh...(laughs)

Thanks,
Blake

go w/ alabative, cheap, goes onto of most surfaces, and dissolves almost completely over time.

-but it is a mess, everything that touches it is blue chalky....

next fall remove everything and do the hard paint. (go sailing now, work later!)

my .02 FWIW.

How much should I buy to paint the m25?

Does it come in black?

Can I paint over the old stuff, or do I need to sand it down?

Can I paint over blisters for now?

I'm a big fan of Pacifica Plus. It's copper-free, easy to work with, and works at least as well as any other paint I've used.

Like Justin says, If you're not going to slip the boat for long periods just get all the old paint off and go slick. I've had Freedom for 36 years and never painted the bottom. Bottom paint won't sovle blister problem. If you can afford it have the "Blisters" repaired and regelcoated by an expert fiberglasser. Bottom paint is mucho $$$. You might break even on the cost paint vs blister repair. Good Luck. Fair Winds and Full Sails....

1.25 gals = 1 good coat

best paint for maine will not be best in the keys.
ask around your area what works best...

you can get away for a few weeks with no bottom paint, especially if scrub it with a brush.

Awesome, thanks for the comments. Is it ok to paint over the blisters for now or do I need to fill them with something....I know I should fix them correctly, but not sure correctly is in the budget right now right now.

Hi

You should ake the time to fix the blisters or more trouble than it's worth could ensue.

Just clean them out well and fill with west system and microbubbles or some other filler. That will fill the blisters and fare the spots in one shot. You can apply bottom paint right over the repair as the west system is your water barrier as well.

Hope this helps.
