i have been learning to sail from a friend and have been looking to buy a boat for the last couple of years. I am wanting to trailer the boat but want something large enough to spend a night or 2 on the lake. I have narrowed it down to a hunter 23 or a newer 23.5. I like the interior and winch placement of the 23 better than the 23.5 but realistically, with the swing keel, the 23.5 looks like it would be easier to trailer. I will be sailing by myself most of the time which places another question: Can a 200lb fellow raise the mast by himself?.

What ever size you won’t regret it.

Doc I bought my 1985 Hunter 23 in February 2003 with zero experience. Before that launching I had never been on a sailboat that was in the water. This is my second year of sailing / learning. I’m slightly on the minus side of fifty and the plus side of 200 pounds and I do most all of my sailing alone. I found an “A” frame mast stepping system on this forum and I’ve not had any trouble. I’ve used this system to step the mast while on the trailer (the easiest method) and in the water (keep track of everything you don’t want to donate to the fishes.) I can’t comment on the trailerability of the swing keel boat. I launch and retrieve mine single handed on my Nebraska lake. Last year my sixteen year old Son, a friend and I spent three fabulous nights aboard while sailing in South Dakota. We never seemed cramped for space above or below. I will admit that we did all of our cooing on the shore as yours truly failed to bring the alcohol for the galley stove. Bob Noble S/V I Miss Lisa

Question for Bob

Bob, I have seen the handsome picture of your H23 a few times. I have a question: is that a drifter sail you're flying? I'd like to know more as I am in search of a light wind headsail for MY H23. TIA Richard H23 "Invictus"

Info with photo

Doc I hope this link works. I went to the archives and found the original post from Peter in January 2003. If the link doesn’t work do an archive search for “single-handed mast raising fig for H23”. I don’t know what I would do without mine. I’ve seen numerous articles praising the use a gin or whisker pole with a bridling system. My H23 came with all of the pieces and parts for one that broke down to fit into a gym bag but I could not figure out what line went where. I came across Peter’s system and it seemed easy and inexpensive to construct and use. I used it the first time and liked it. I attached some 2” conduit holders to the trailer to hold the long frame between uses. I hope this answers your questions, if not, I’m in the owner’s directory, you can contact me direct.
