Hello Sailor Gurus,
I have a trailer tie down strap that seems to be simple, but I can't seem to keep the simple thing to stay tight. I feel stupid to be outwitted by a strap!!! Help Please and Thank You.

I have something similar on my hobie trailer

There should be a metal slip ring that goes over the part I circled in red

Imagine you flipped the black metal part (clasp) to the right... and then snug up the strap.. then when you flipped the clasp back the other way, it would add just a little more tension... then a metal ring slips down over the part I have circled on the clasp to hold the clasp in the tensed position.

Yes there is a metal ring on the back side of the strap, I pull the strap tight, flip and twist the bracket over ,slide the ring over it then I have to tie a knot with the loose end of the strap over the bracket. iIt still doesn't seem to be tight enough

yeah! I feel your pain... I gave up on mine to and went with some of these.... Be careful not to over tighten these.

I strongly suspect that the strap was somehow threaded wrong before you received it. If you pull the two straps apart totally, and re-thread the pickup line in the other side, I think it will start working.

The only problem with ratcheting straps is; people tend to over tighten them. This can crack or stress things in-necessarily. At the same place that sells the ratchet straps, they usually sell pull lock straps.

Sailor Jeff made a good point about the racheting style as not to overtighten but you own a Hunter 23 with a wing keel on the trailer. The only place of over doing it would be on the rub rail but having sold and trailered many of that model boats over the years, I strongly suggest the recheting style as the boat sits high on the trailer and the style you are asking about always slipped for me which is why I got away from them. Not sure why but it could be the length. The other smaller orange colored straps not good either. I suggest a yellow two inch strap long enough to go over the boat with the racheting style. Also, twist the strap on each side to keep it from slapping. Maybe it is the slapping on your strap causing it to become loose but either way, I would suggest highly the racheting style. If it is new, you might want to put a cloth down on each side where the strap comes over. After 20 miles, stop and pull over as a good precautionary thing to do to check all tie downs and wheel hub heat. You will have a little heat but if too hot, then you have bearing issues.
