I am new to sailing and trailering. I am looking for a reliable brand of hitch, and an inexpensive source for the kit to install myself. Any recommendations? Rob Harold

Need to know what size boat, what weight is of boat, what kind of tow vehicle, etc. Then you can get an appraisal of what you need.

Call them and tell them what size load, and what type vehicle. I already have done the comparison shopping for you. They were the cheapest in my area. You may need to have a transmission cooler installed on your vehicle. It's cheaper than replacing a transmission, not to mention the inconvienience of a breakdown on your way to launch the boat.

Is good. Call around. I put a Class I on my old accord about 9 years ago for a catamarran. The hitch, wiring harness and installation cost about $200 from a local shop. The car's towing brackets were removed and the unit was bolted right in. When I got rid of the car I removed the tow bar hoping it would fit on my new car... not so lucky.

I agree with the U Haul recommendation. We had a good experience with them. jmp

Fwiw...

Prices for the same installation can vary a LOT from shop to shop. When I had a trailer hitch (Draw-Tite) installed on my Explorer--which already had the "towing package" (wiring, tranny cooler etc)--I was quoted prices that were all over the wall--from a ridiculous $450 to the $175 I paid, and everything in between--for the same hitch, same installation. So just 'cuz a particular U-Haul franchise in one city had the best price doesn't mean another one in another city will. You need to get on the phone and call around. And btw, Draw-Tite is a very good quality hitch.
