Can a Catalina 22 be pulled safely by a class I hitch (200 lb. tongue weight, 2000 gross trailer weight)? My 2002 Saturn 5-speed station wagon is limited to this class of hitch.

I think you boat may be heavier than

your car. My volvo wagon is limited to 2500 lbs trailer weight.

The short answer is "no"!

Sorry Mr Bill but your boat, trailer, motor & all of the other stuff on board can total approximately 3200 pounds. You should have more than 300 pounds weight on your hitch ball for proper towing balance. Regards from Canada.

It'll go....but will it stop?

You really need a heavier rig to trailer you Cat 22 safely.

"Safely" is the key word...

It will probaly pull it, but I sure as hell wouldn't drag that boat around behind a Saturn wagon. I used to pull my C22 behind a Chevy Astro van and that wasn't enough tow vehicle for me.

Find the max tow weight of the Saturn; the max weight of the boat/motor/trailer; the GVWR and GCWR of the Saturn. Compare the numbers and you will have your answer.

Not on a class one hitch.

An automatic transmission can multiply torque but not a manual one. Slipping the clutch will create premature wear. Your vehicle is also front wheel drive and weight transfer will work against you when pulling up a ramp. Consider getting a sailing partner with a nice tow vehicle or consider renting a truck if it is a one time move. You can arrange with some marinas to dry store the boat on its trailer and the may launch and retreive it for you. If none of this alternatives work for you purchase a V8 powered, automatic transsmision truck or SUV with a factory towing package. A limited slip differential or 4 wheel drive will be a plus.
