I need to modify a 26' "Donzi" galvanized trailer for my 1977 22' O' Day sailboat. Looking for some detailed pictures depicting all important supports for vessel transportation. harriswilnc@aol.com 910-620-4390

http://picasaweb.google.com/rwdsr53/Sailboats# Go to my picassa site and look at the pics of the Catalina at the bottom. Thats what I did with one of those bass boat trailers and it worked pretty well. If it looks like the boat is sitting crooked in the picture, it's because the ground is sloped that way

Thank You

Thank you Sir. Those pictures give me a clearer understanding of what my set up should be.

Dr Food,

Grab a sketch pad and a tape measure and head to the marina. There is probably a boat like it that you can measure like crazy. The owner will not mind.

I was fortunate with mine. I bought a Lancer 25 with no trailer. It was the second boat that I looked at that day. At the first marina, there was a Lancer 25 on a trailer and I was lucky enough to have recognized it as we passed. So . . . after agreeing on the sale of the second boat, I headed back to the first marina with my pad and tape.

You'll need:
twelve ( 12 ) risers ( 12" or 16" ) They slide inside each other and are sold seperatly.. Six risers total.. 3 each side.
Six ( 6 ) " L " brackets
two ( 2 ) Wood 2" x 6" X 8' for bunks

You can use rubber rollers or wheels for the keel, but it will be pricey and more measuring will need to be done. I like to use another 2" x 6" and just set it on the trailer and tie it to the frame with hemp rope. Make your measurments with regards to the keel and set the risers and bunks in place.. Risers are adjustable.

Good Luck

Get 4 or 6 adjustable risers and top L-brackets:

I've built several sailboat trailers and for a 22 footer, you can probably get by with just 4, 6 if you want overkill.. I can't imagine what you would do with 12!! One thing to keep in mind though.. the center of gravity on your sailboat will be very different (forward) than that of a motor boat, so you will need to either locate the sailboat further back on the trailer or move the axle(s) further forward to compensate and keep the tongue weight around 10% of the total. Standard 2x6 pressure treated lumber from your local home improvement store works just fine, and you can cover with indoor-outdoor carpet from the same place.

Cheers,
Brad
