Catalina 27 Southern California
I am about to take ownership of a Catalina 27 and I need to trailer it to my destination.

I am completely new to the game of moving boats around so obviously I started by searching online, I couldn't seem to find a lot of information regarding trailers.

Can anybody help me out with trailer options or advice?

Thanks,
Dave.

Well, I'll give you some advice.... have a plan to move the boat before you buy it, or make it a contingency of purchase......a bit late, I admit, but sincere. Good luck.

Very few sailors in So. Cal. trailer a boat that size, most are kept in the water year round. In the frozen areas of the country, however, people tend to invest in trailers for winter storage. You may be able to rent one after it's owner drops his boat in the water for the summer. Keep looking.

One thing you might try is calling Catalina dealers to get leads on boat movers or trailer owners who might rent to you.

I trailer my Catalina 27. In the winter I move it to Florida and in the summer I sail it in Lake Erie. I use a 3/4 ton pick up and would not recomend anything smaller. If you are not planing on doing something similar I would just get a mover. I bought the boat in Virgina and had it moved to Ohio for about 900.00. The cost to put it in the water and set the mast usally runs about 400.00. I had a custom trailer made which cost about 4000.00. You have to watch bridge heights and gas stations since it is very long and is about 12 ft high, with a wing keel.

Get in touch with TRIAD and ask how much. They have plans for most boats and their quality is excellent.

Where are you trailering from? I will be bringing mine from Butler, PA to Los Angeles this June. I bought if from a guy who is in the business of making trailers.

Cat,

Are you the one planning on turning this into a roving art studio? If so, how will the trailer be used and how will the boat be manned?

Recently on Craig's list I have seen several old house trailer frames (3 axels) converted over to sailboat hauling trailers. Some stantions welded on and pads or rollers and you have a very heavy duty trailer. Might just look around.

I have a Shore'lander made in Ida Grove Iowa. They are makers of boat trailers. Both power and sail. My trailer was built back in 78' to go with my boat and my boat was mfg. in Southern Calif.

I am fairly most large boat dealers will be able to provide access to a trailer for bucks$$$
