Trailer Brakes

I have an O'Day 25 and need some help with the trailer. I am unsure if the brakes are in working condition, but don't know how to check them exactly. We towed the boat and it was hard to tell if the brakes were working, but it didn't seem like it was really pushing the truck. There is no connection to the truck besides the lights, so I am assuming they are mechanically operated brakes. Is there an easy way to tell if the brakes are working without having to take the boat or wheels off the trailer. Thanks.

surge brakes

It sounds like you have surge brakes on your trailer. When you apply your tow vehicle brakes,the trailer and boat pushing against the hitch activate the hydaulic brakes on the trailer. I assume that with a twenty five footer you have a tandem trailer. I guess the easiest way to test them would be to drive around and hit the brakes good a few times, then feel the brake drums. If they are hot or warm to the touch the brakes are probably working. There may only be brakes on one axle, so look and see which one. I hope this helps a little.

Same Trailer

My brakes are surge brakes. When you step on your vehical brakes, a piston in the hitch of your trailer operates the same as your foot on your own brake peddle.I have the same boat and trailer. The boat and trailer weigh about 4,500. If you go down a steep hill and ride the brakes, then touch the trailer wheels, they should be warm. Also, if your trailer didn't have brakes, that much weight would push you like a 50 knot wind at your stern. You would notice it!My brakes work great.
