I am looking into getting a class C or smaller RV and be able to tow my O'day 22 and would a RV be OK to launch and retrieve my boat. I looked through 10 pages in the trailer sailor forum and didn't see any post on RV and trailer sailor usage .

David S, happy sailing everyone!

Dave,

Towing wouldn't be a problem, but getting that much weight up a slick inclined ramp would wory me. My boat is significantly heavier than yours (about 5000 lbs with the trailer) so I made sure that I bought an off road, 4WD truck with a good sized engine. I'm a ready, fire, aim kind of guy but this causes me concern. I'd like to hear how you make. I hope I'm clueless, for your sake.

Fair Winds!

For what it's worth I live in SE Utah on one of the highways to Lake Powell. People come through here all the time with all sizes of RV's towing boats (haven't seen a sailboat) and some have yet another trailer behind the boat trailer with jet skies on it. I'm sure some must be over the legal length limit, but that doesn't stop them.

I don't know if they are having issues at the ramp or not, but it looks as if they have been doing it for sometime,

I have a 25 foot Class C and have towed and launched my O'Day 19 without any problems. I was careful not to be on a slippery steep ramp, but have been on a steep ramp. The RV does have a lot more weight (close to 6 tons) for traction than a typical car.

I am towing a 1977 South Coast 25 w/a 1979 Executive 33'.The boat tows very easy on the tamdem trailer w/electric brakes for stopping power. As for launching it's just way easier to get the tractor at the marina or campground for that.I have launched our 17' Bayliner Cuddy off the beach w/out any problems using the RV.I probably could launch the sailboat on a shallow grade boat ramp like but I haven't tried yet.On highways I only ever travel at 55,for fuel savings and safety.

Some trailer sailors use their boats as a travel trailer when on the road. I guess towing a sailboat with a cabin behind an RV expands the possibilities.

Thanks for the reply's , I presently tow with a Ford F-150 long bed 4 wheel drive :) from Asheville, NC to Punta Gorda and the Keys and back home. Any one know where a poor boy, 73, can buy an old RV cheap? Any one ever heard of a 4 wheel drive RV?

Check the GCWR of your RV...that's the total weight of EVERYTHING you will be towing...the RV and trailer/boat. Check that number with the actual weights.
