I'm in the market for buying a trailerable sailboat, and my preference is an O'Day. I have sailed a 28 and 35 on occasion, and I love them. My dilemma is finding the towing weights of the various O'Day models. My CR-V has a towing weight of 1500lb including trailer. Where can I find the specs in order to narrow down my choices??

You're going to need a bigger vehicle

I'm afraid you're CR-V is not big enough to tow anything as big as even a 28. My 272LE weighs about 5,400 pounds. Check the tab at the top of the website on "Boat Info Center" and then "photos and specs." You'll find spec sheets on most models including weight/displacement.

I wasn't really clear about the boat size

Lou,thanks for the fast response. Actually I wasn't figuring on anything as large as a 28. I would think something in the 18-22 ft range would be practical, but I have no info.

TOW WEIGHTS

You can get all of the information you are looking for in this site. Go to the boat info section. Or use the link i attached. You are going to have to stay with a Day sailor or smaller if you plan on doing a lot of towing. We have a mariner and can pull it fine with our Jeep Cherokee v6 but it works the barakes a bit. Hope this helps.

Field already VERY narrow

CR-V is a great little vehicle, but not for towing anything very heavy. Even if you limit your total towed weight to 1500 lbs, you may want to add an aux. transmission cooler if the CR-V has an automatic trans. And even for that relatively light weight, I'd want some brakes on the trailer too. That is, if you want to be able to handle a 'panic stop' situation at highway speeds. Assuming even an aluminum frame, a single axle trailer will probably weigh c. 350-400 lbs: that doesn't leave you much weight for the boat. If you're serious about wanting to go trailer-sailing, you'd better think about a bigger tow vehicle.

O'day 20

Since you're looking and I'm selling I figure I should put this out to you. I believe the towing weight of an O'day 20 is in the 1500 lb range. I've got one for sale as I've moved up to an O'day 25. Email me if you're interested. gaarmstrong at netzero dot net. I realize that this boat is at the top end of your CRV's range, but if you trailer like me, beginning and end of season for put in and take out, it should be fine. Greg ***correction*** Displacement as listed here is 1600 lbs. Still, if you're interested, let me know. If anyone knows the actual weight of boat and trailer for an O'day 20 could you please post? Thanks.

O'Day 26

I have an O'Day 26, which I just bought a trailer for, the trailer alone weighs 1500lbs. For a 25, you'd need a similar sized trailer. The O'Day 26 minimum trailer weight (without anything extra, like food, water, etc. aboard) is just about 4000lbs. Add an outboard, gear, and other stuff you might want to keep on board while you trailer, and the weight will just go up. I use a 1978 Suburban with a 454cu for towing, it's a bit of overkill, but I got it cheap.

Need less boat

With a CR-V you shouldn't be towing anything heavier than a Daysailer. For a 25' a truck & a V8 would be best. You'll also need a trailer w/ brakes. One last thing-trailering & especially setting up a large sailboat isn't a lot of fun. For daysailing I wouldn't bother. For longer cruising, it might suit you.
