we're planning to buy one for the kids to play with at multi-day anchors but I'm not sure how I'd tow it and not have it damage my 40 hunter???? we have a dinghy and davits now but these sailboat dinghys seem heavy for davits Anyone have any experience with this.

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
Walker Bay

Why not get a Walker Bay and put the sailing kit on it. You could carry it as a dingy and then put the mast and sail on it for the kids to play with. Just a thought.

Don't use a poly painter

Don't use a poly line to tow with. Poly comes untied way too easy; believe me I know. Get yourself some double braid floating line instead. I bought a towing bridle for the bow of the dinghy and then used floating double braid from the bridle to the stern cleats. Actually have a bridle off the stern as well. Makes it much easier to line the dinghy up behind the boat, especially in heavy weather.

Be careful with the hard sailing dinghy .....

If you tow be sure to tie the painter high on the mothership so that the dinghy bow is held 'high' almost off the water .... this will prevent the dinghy from becoming 'real squirrely' when its 'hull speed' is exceeded (and the sailing dinghy becomes unstable and wants to become an instant 'sea anchor' ... ask me how I know this) ;-) Better to use davits !!!!!

Have seen

I have seen many sailboats with davits holding a dinghy and outboard. Check and see what the rating is for the davits and how much the sailing dinghy weighs. Did the davits come with the boat. I saw a 41 hunter with davits and sailing dinghy and it did the job OK. Nick

Great Babysitter!

I can remember when I grew up owning a boat. It just never stopped running whenever it was in the water. It worked the same when my two sons used our inflatable dinghy. It was well worth the money! And they learned what responsibility was!

What about folding dinghys with a sail rig?

I have been curious about portable folding dinghys that have a sailing rig option. Such as the porta-bote ( http://www.porta-bote.com/sail.htm ) There was an article in Good Old Boat about the Sea Hopper folding dinghy, made in England. http://www.seahopperfoldingboats.com/ I'm thinking that a decent sailable folding dinghy might be not only easier to carry as the working dinghy for our boat, but also would be great fun to take with us on road trips when we are travelling overland. Anyone out there have experience with sailing foldable dinghys?
