Hunter 420 Passage San Diego
I've never owned a boat, but I travel Monday through Thursday for my job. I'm really getting tired of hotel rooms after living in them for the past 10 years. I'm thinking of buying a sail boat to live on and maybe even learning how to sail! I have a C2500 (3/4 ton) Chevy Pickup truck with a 6.5 litre turbo diesel, 4.10 posi-traction rear end and 5 speed manual transmission. What is the largest Hunter that I could tow with this vehicle? I'm thinking that I could probably tow a 320, but I really don't know. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks, Rick

H260??

The H260 is designed to trailer and rig easily. I'm not aware of a larger Hunter that you could tow routinely.

Capacity vs legality

Towing capacity is one thing (your truck has lots of it, even with a manual tranny), but my understanding is that to tow anything larger than a 260 requires special highway permits due to the size of the trailer (particularly the beam).

Hunter 260

I have a 1995 26' and routinely trailer it. It's a wide load (9.5') and plenty long. Had to get permit ($250 a year!) to be legal. If I went over 10', I'd need a car in back on the interstates. I have a '95 3/4 Dodge and it handles it nicely. Anything larger and you won't have a swing keel, so the boat will be up high and unstable. I wouldn't recommend any bigger.
