Im looking into buying a macgregor 26c and I have a 1996 jeep cherokee 4wd v6 with high output and I was wondering if it could pull the boat with little or no problem. The boat trailer has surge brakes on it. Any help with this question would be welcome..... Thanks R Williams

Grand Cerokee?

I pull a Hunter 260 with a 98 Grand Cherokee that has a V6. I looked at a standard Cherokee, but found the frame was not big enough to handle the class hitch needed for the weight. It seems to run better with premium gas when towing. Keep some weight forward to increase the weight on the ball and don't forget to turn off the overdrive feature.

I Did

I towed my 26D all over the place with a 92 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 straight 6. It did have the trailer towing package and the towing capacity was 5000 lbs. No problems with the power or transmission but make sure you have enough tongue weight or the trailer will wag the dog. I now have a Grand Cherokee with a V-8 but haven't towed the boat yet this year.

No Problem

I tow my 1988 Mac 26d with a 1983 ford van with a straight 6 and I have no problems what so ever. I have no brake package and I have been down some seriously steep boat ramps and the van never hesitated in pulling the boat out of the water. Water ballast, aint it great? Stu

I get good performance from my trusty V6 4.0l minivan. It's rear wheel drive. If it's not busy, I usually pull out slow and let the ballast drain rather than pull all of that extra weight.

Weight of boat and trailer?

Anyone know for sure what the combined rig weighs? I always am very careful when I drag the boat out with the ballast still full. I have a 3/4 ton 4x4 diesel ford pickup that allows me to drive 100's of miles at 70+ MPH. I always lube the wheel bearings after immersion, and at every fuel stop on long trips. Never had a problem, and I can't really tell the boat is back there if I don't look. John S Boise

trailer brakes

Speaking of trailers and towing, what is the consensus on needing trailer brakes? The boat I am considering weighs say 2500 lbs. with gear, plus trailer say 1000 lbs. It is well within the towing capacity of my rig. But current owner says without brakes the trailer will fishtail if you hit the car brakes going down hill. Thanks for any input. larry
