Much of the topside teak on my "88" Hunter is in bad shape. Has anyone replaced theirs with wood other than teak?

Bad Teak

Teak, if it has not been cared for, looks worse than it really is. Invest $20 bucks and buy a teak cleaning/conditioning kit. Use the Teak cleaner, then the brightner and you will probably be surprised. Unless the teak is split and broken, the cleaning/brightening will bring it back to life. Youcan sand it to smooth it out and then comes the tough part. What to finish/seal it with. Cetol in the Florida sun seems to work great and is highly recommended. Do not, I repeat, do not replace the teak with any other WOOD. Replace it with plastic if you have to. Good luck and happy boat maintenance.

yup

Richard: I agree with Darrel, try cleaning it with one of the cleaning kits and then giving it 3 coats of cetol or armada. If you do want to replace the rails they have them made of c-board (plastic) or you can get stainless steel ones and then you are really finished. If they are really shot and you want teak there are several sources and they are really not that expensive either.

Wood Rots/Teak doesn't

Teak holds up in the enviorment of water/sun much better than any other wood.

All wood weathers and rots...

but some woods are less resistant than others. Rot is a fungus that eats the celulose in wood (wood fiber).
