H22 sailers, what do you do with the topping lift when sailing? Do you take it off the boom and tie it to the back stay or leave it on the boom?

I have had 3 boats with topping lifts attached from the top of the mast to the end of the boom. On the end of the boom I have a swivel block. The line runs through the block to a cleat, forward and on the side of the boom with a hole in the middle. Thread the line through the hole in the cleat and secure with a figure 8 knot, leave enough line so that when you uncleat it you will clear the back of the sail. this is a good flexible setup and it costs a heck of a lot less than a ridged vang. You should also have an adjustable vang for this type of setup. Ray

What's on my H22

is a simple cable attached at the mast head and then at the end of the boom. I think it serves no other purpose than to keep the boom in place when not sailing.

On my Hunter 23 (1986) I have a 1/4 line that is connect to two spring gate snaps or trigger snaps near the bottom of the line. The lower one is for when the sail is up and running. This snap is attached to the boom (on the pin for the topping lift) which makes the line a little loose and has the sail taking the full weight of the boom. The second snap is tied on the same line at a higher position than the first one to keep the boom higher when the sail is down. I have an awning that I can pull up, so I tied the knot attached to the snap just high enough for the boom to clear the awning. The setup works great if you are not a short person. Now if you have some money to spend there are a couple of topping kits online that make the topping line adjustable by the use of two pulleys (connected to the topping line) at the back of the boom. You can adjust the boom at any position. This would keep you from having to walk all the way to the mast to adjust the topping as discribed from another response. Do what works best for you. These are good old boats, each with a different personal touch.
