I have replaced my topping lift with a boomkicker. I read on a another post the suggestion that you could use double the length of the topping line and use it to run up a flag, light or use it to help step the mast. Have others done this and what suggestions are there for the type of block shackle to use?

Yes !

I too use a boom kicker, and like you say, it frees up the topping line for other uses. to do so, you must double up on the length of line and run the line through the highest block on the front of your mast. the block would normally be used for the spinaker. I use mine to help step the mast, I tie one end off on the mast (horn cleat or cringle) and the other end I tie a couple of loops about 24 inches apart. I have a second winch on my front mast support that I use by connecting the topping line with loop to the hook on the winch. I just crank the handle and up she goes.no back strain ! By leaving the boat winch connected to the boat, the boat doesnt move around while I'm rigging her, nice and secure. I also leave the rear tie downs in place until I'm ready to launch. the two loops on the topping line are spaced far enough to attach my distress flag, simply connect the flag and run it up. You can also connect to fenders together with a single line and stuff them into the blue nylon bag, connect the topping line to the single line between the two fenders. now when you cap size, you can hoist the fenders out (up) to the end of the mast for added floation especally if you have not sealed or foamed your mast to help prevent your boat from turtling :-( I got a little winded here, sorry.
