topping lift

I have recently been given a '88 Hunter 23, and have read the procedure for stepping the mast, and done a dry run. My question is how does one handle the topping lift when one removes/replaces the boom- do you keep a small line threaded thru the boom?

I am a new owner of a 85/23 and that is the way the previous owner had done it.
