I am a new sailor who just purchased a 23' Hunter. I am having problems figuring out how to secure the topping lift. Where on the mast do I attach my line and is there any hardware involved? Also, does it use a pulley system or is it one single line? Thanks for your help!

There are two possible topping lifts on a sloop. One exits the mast forward and is used to support the spinnaker pole, the other exits the mast aft and is used to support the boom. Assuming we're talking about the latter, just tie it to the end of the boom. A simple bowline will suffice. Most riggers don't splice the end of topping lifts because it's a good idea to cut a foot of line off the end every year, thus changing the spot that wears on the sheeve (at the top of the mast) so that chaffing is minimized. No blocks, no hardware, just a single line.
