Topping lift

I have recently purchased a 94 model 23.5. The question is : Does the third jam on the port side of the boom act as the jam for the topping lift? The present topping lift arrangement is like those on most other boats this size , a line from the masthead down to the boom with 2 snap hooks, a short one to use while at dock and a longer one for use while underway.

My topping lift

is the center line. It runs the length of the boom and up to the mast head. I adjust the boom by adjusting the line at the boom cleats. When I raise or lower the mainsail I ajdust it that time. This works great for me. BTW, my 23.5 is a 1994 also, also owners manual shows it running this way. I did install a quick clip to disconnect when I drop the mast and have to remove the boom.

Charlie, The owners manual for my 95 H26 also

shows the 19, 23.5, and 26. It shows the first line which is on the port side as being the topping lift. The center line is the outhaul and the starboard line is the main sail first reef line. I tried last year to eliminate using a boom line for the topping lift so I could use that line and space for a second reef line. I had the mast top mounted topping lift line in place and added extra length to this line so I could clip this line to a short piece of line mounted on the boom. It proved to be a hassle and I really never needed that extra reefing line in enough of a hurry to warrent this hassle. A boom kicker or solid vang would also allow this set-up without any hassle other than the dollars required to make it happen. Ray S/V Speedy
