Topping lift

I figure the topping lift for my 1985 28.5 is secured to the masthead as I cannot find anything to lead me to think otherwise. The "manual" gives no clues. I want to replace it before it becomes a problem. Can anyone tell me the best way to remove and replace it and with what?

You will need to go up the mast!

Lou:You will need to up the mast to determine how the topping lift is attached. I think that there is a pin that goes through the mast head which holds the topping lift in place. You could make a new topping lift from vinyl covered wire and put a loop on both ends. Then you can attach the top back as it is attached now. Then bottom would have a small block with a line through it to control the topping lift.Let me know if I can give you a hand. I be down the weekend after next.

On my '86 28.5 there was an adjustable topping lift that came down the mast and cleated off.
