My recently purchased 1994 Hunter 29.5 has a rigid boom vang that the previous owner had installed. There is still a topping lift attached to the end of the boom, and I can't see any real purpose for it since the vang supports the boom when the sail is down. I'm thinking of removing it this Fall after I pull the boat out of the water and drop the mast. Before I do that, am I missing any reason I would want to keep it?

How else will you get to the masthead in the event of a main halyard breakage or jam?
you could just pull it close to the mast.
Also, when stowing or reefing sails, crew weight on the boom will cause the boom to go down - a confidence sapping event!
I fitted a rigid vang but still keep my PVC covered wire (lifeline wire) topping lift to the boom end.

I have a boomvang K1000 on my H28.5- I got tired of the topping lift getting tangled on the backstay. I put a line cleat on my split backstay and simply wrap the topping lift around the wire of the backstay above where it splits. I use the topping lift at the end of the season to stay the boom with the mainsheet when on the hard.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll attach it to the mast and keep it there rather than remove it.
