This may sound like a naive question but I have been looking high and low to find the halyard for the topping lift on my 1986 Hunter 31. Where should I look? Got the regular B&R rig with reefing lines and outhaul running inside the boom to the jam cleats. Thanks for your help!

Is there one?

I assume from your post that the topping lift is there. Can you see the attachment at the top of the mast? Maybe with binoculars? A lot of early Hunters came without an adjustment at the top. A previous owner had installed a small set of blocks at the bottom for adjustment. I removed that in favor of adding a spare halyard and using it to connect to the topping lift. Eventually I will remove it and install a rigid boom vang.

Starboard side of the boom

On my 84 H31 the topping lift halyard exits about half way down the starboard side of the boom. I would assume a 84 B&R Rig and a 86 B&R rig would be the same.

Good point...

..Ed, I did not consider that they may in fact not be an adjustment mechanism. I will have a closer look. In the longer run, the rigid boom vang definitely sounds like the better alternative. Thanks!

Added a Boomkicker to our '87 31'

We removed our topping lift (non-adjustible) when we installed a Boomkicker. Two years now. We are very satisfied with it.

Fixed at the mast head.

The topping lift was originally attached at the mast head. The line runs down to the end of the boom with a small block attached to the end of it. Then there was a line that was attached to the port side of the boom. This line runs up through the block and down through a cheek block on the starboard side of the boom which goes forward to a mid point on the boom with a small cleat. Alternative would be to use the alternate halyard that is available on this rig or add a rigid vang like the Garhauer vang.

Topping Lift

The cleat center on the boom is the adjustment for the topping lift.

Probably a non-adjustable t-lift

Thanks to everyone for your assistance. Though I will need to reconfirm that with my next trip to the boat, I have come to realize that I probably have a non-adjustable topping lift consisting of a simple steel cable running between the masthead and the end of the boom. At least now I know I don't have to look any further. Happy sailing!

Found it!

Found out that the topping lift adjustment is achieved via one of the sheets that run through the boom. In this case it is the one in the middle and adjustment is done with the jam cleat on the mast side of the boom. My outhaul, on the other hand, runs through a cheek block on the starboard side of the boom and is terminated via a cleat.
