Topping Lift Length and Type

I acquired a Catalina 30 that has its mast lying on top of the boat. Time to step the mast and I am going through the check list of items. There is an old worn Lazy Jack but I think for time and simplicity sake I will go with a standard topping lift. Not sure if that is what I need, the line that holds up the boom end.
Should this be a cable or rope? Also, what is the lenght?

I'd go with a rope for less chafe, and at least as long as the leech of your main. Use thimbles.

You can always trim it down, no?

Has to be as long as the leach and down the mast to the cleat. So probably 100ft. and then trim it once the mast up.

That probably depends on the year. On my '88, the topping lift is dead ended to a pin at the masthead and through a block at the end of the boom. It is controlled by a jamb cleat near the gooseneck. So the required length is leach plus foot.

Mine is terminated about 2 feet above horizontal with a small block. There, another line takes over, with a two to one advantage leading to the cabintop.

Think about it.
