Any suggestions on how to install a topping life? Where do you attach it to the boom and with what? Do you install a double block at the top of the mast with one side for the main halyard and one for the lift? How do you secure the boom to keep it from swinging in the breeze? Lazy Jack----bought a kit for them but there is no information on how high up the mast to install them? All the way to the top? Thanks, Jim Hendersonville, Tn

topping lift and lazt jacks 26x

To keep the boom from swinging while moored or motoring I bought a wire clamp 6ft. of coated wire and a snap hook. I clamped the wire on the aft stay at the height I wanted the boom. When not in use I hook it on to the aft stay. Works great for 6 years.

lazy jack

I ran my lazy jack lines thru fairleads attached about 6 to 10 inches above spreaders. No benefit to go to top of boom. I used 3/16 line tied with bowline knot to top of boom at rear stay fitting. I attached an eye to end of boom, ran topping lift thru it to a line cleat on the bottom of the boom about 3 feet forward. This works best if the eye is on the vey bottom edge of the end of the boom. Have enough line for adequate slack when sailing and tightening the vang. To keep boom from swinging and out of the way when not under sail, I use a short line with snap hooks on both ends to secure the boom to the stay using rhe eye as the attachment point.

Topping lift

My topping lift has a line running from the very back of the boom up to a block above the block for the mainsail and then down to a small cleat on the mast just above and next to the halyard cleat. This actually lets us sail with the topping lift still attached, which is one less thing to remember to do,if you are a lazy sailor like me. Hope this helps.
