I was just wondering how many owners out there in cyberville have running topping lifts on their booms. I have a new mainsail with the Dutchman system and was debating about whether to install the running system or just mount it to the existing wire topping lift. Does anyone have a Dutchman system with a fixed topping lift, adjusted from the boom? I'm not sure if a running lift is the best thing for me at this time, I'd love advise from others with a Dutchman system as to their type of topping lift and the pro's and con's of each.

No topping lift

Dec.12, 2000 Dear Steven, The Legend came with a Dutchman system but the topping lift issue was resolved by the installation of a rigid boom vang which did away with the topping lift entirely, and has made reefing the main a much easier task. I would suggest that you consider this alternative if you haven't done so already. Brian Pickton@ BeneteauOwners.net Aboard the Legend, Rodney Bay St. Lucia

Topping Lift

The 310 also has a rigid vang, so there is no need for the topping lift. After a season of the Dutchman, I would have to say we are pretty happy with it.

Dutchman Topping Lift

I have a running topping lift with Dutchman on my 33.5 that I upgraded from a static topping lift with Dutchman. The reason for doing this was so I could use a sun shade and get the mono filament guidelines out of the way. I purchased two small blocks and new line to add to the existinx topping lift. I have been pleased with it so far and am still fine tuning it. Anyone know how to reglue or ? the chafing disks back together?

glue disks

Get ahold of Martin at Dutchman. They are very accomodating and should be able to help you out.

The running system is a pain.

Steve: I have the 'C' system (I think that is the one you are talking about). There is a cam cleat at the end of the boom on the topping lift line. I am having a new main sail cover made and will still have the slits cut for the static lines. It makes putting a cover over the boom convienient thats about it.

sun cover

So for now the only reason I see for installing a running topping lift is to allow room for a sun cover. Not a problem since my sunshade can be tied under or over the boom (its a hand-me-down from another boat and it is cut from the mast back to the bimini). Guess if I replace the sunshade I'll consider the new topping lift, until than I'll just use what I have. As I like to say, if it aint broke than don't fix it. Thanx for all the advise.
