I am in the process of setting up my 240,which I bought from a 3rd party,no contact with previous owner. The mast has a vinyl coated cable as a topping lift ,ends in an eye,and is about 2 ft too short. I also own a Macgregor 26, and I have a rope which I have adjusted for proper boom height with sail down and it never binds at all while sailing. How should I set up this extension, and why didn't they just make it proper length from factory?

The bottom of the wire topping lift is supposed to be attached to a line run through the aft end of the boom to a cam cleat at the front of the boom to allow adjustment. You should have 3 lines coming out of the aft end of the boom: an outhaul for the mainsail, a reefing line, and the topping lift attachment. All are cleated at the front of the boom. If one is missing, you will need to fish some line through the boom. I think it is 5/16" line.

My 240 came with a boomkicker to support the boom and no topping lift. It's a different set-up than other boats I've had, but I actually like it.

You can also put a turning block to the back of the topping lift cable eye and run the line thru it secured to the opposite side of the boom to an eye strap assuming the third line in the boom is on one side and then put an eye strap on the other side of the boom.
