I've got a 7 year old boat. I can't seem to get all the stains out off the deck. I've used Greased Lightening,Clorox with bleach, and starbrite nonskid deck cleaner. Nothing seems to get out the pesky black residue left when you clean bird stuff off. Can you give me some ideas what to use or do. Thnaks. Paul H 95 H26 S/V Linda Belle

Re: Topside Cleaning

You might try a product that you can get in K-Mart or Walmart...it's called BAR KEEPERS FRIEND. It's in a package similar to Comet, but works much better. Also good for removing diesel grime off the transom and sides...and a good rust stain remover. be careful with abrasives.

Paul: Be careful using abrasives. While this may clean the goo off, you are opening up the gelcoat for even worse cleanup later. One of the products that is sold here on the website is Island Girl. You should consider using the Island Girl pink to get this stuff out of the non-skid surface. Then you can reseal the non-skid with their sealer. Another inexpensive product that I have had some success with is Clorox Gel. The key is to get it clean and then seal it to keep it clean.

Nonskid deck cleaner

I've used Starbrite non-skid deck cleaner on bug residue and have had very good luck. I pour a bit on the trouble area, gently scrub (more distribute than scrub), let it sit for a few minutes, and then vigorously scrub with a hand scrub brush. It really has done a good for me. Try those steps if you haven't.

One more time...

1. Topside is the part of the hull between the gunwhale and waterline; its not the deck. 2. FSR - Fiberglass Stain Remover - the best, quickest stain remover for f'glass. Acid based, non-abrasive. jv

FSR source

Paul, I got it from a friend - best way to get stuff is to have someone give it to you! LaDonna is right, West Marine. Its a light blue, translucent jelly in a clear jar about 3.5" by 3.5" with a white cap. That's what mine looks like. It smells like phosphoric acid. I paint it on with one of those cheap chinese white bristle brushes, and after it sits a while, I flush it with lots of fresh water wiht perhpas a little scrubing. It works less well on rust stains, for which I use "CLR" - which I think stands for "calcium, lime, and rust" - in a plastic silver colored jug form the hardware store. jv
